10 Jul Can’t stop wearing: Preview x Happy Skin Shut Up & Kiss Me Moisturizing Matte Lippie in Hot Stuff
It’s not you, it’s me. That’s what I say to my Happy Skin x Preview Shut Up & Kiss Me Moisturizing Matte lippie in Hot Stuff (P599). Because on every one else, it looks sophisticated and slightly vampy, but on myself it can turn me into Morticia Adams.
I’ve always wanted a deep red lipstick that I could pull off and while stalking Hot Stuff through friends’ Instagram posts and blogs, I thought it was the one. But like most vampy lip colors, my skin tone brings out the purple hues more than the red and leaves me looking pale. It was the same case with Mac’s Rebel no matter how many times I swiped it on. It’s not you, Hot Stuff, it’s me. :,(
Have you ever experienced online makeup shopping gone wrong? The limited edition lipstick came out when I had just given birth to Mateo so I was not going out of our home at all to speed up my recovery. (I’m still on a semi-house arrest situation.) But because I love Happy Skin and especially its lipsticks (see my review here!), I just had to try it! So I sent the asawa (trans: spouse) on an errand: buy SS crème for a gift and P.S. this lipstick for me please. Don’t you just love how you can easily send photos now when you text? That’s how I give him my beauty bilins so it simplifies things for him. (That’s another tip for you, wives and girlfriends! Haha!)
Solution: Mix it with another shade
Here’s my tip for lipsticks that don’t turn out quite the way you wanted it to—mix it with another lipstick until you get the desired color. I now layer a bright red lipstick on top of Hot Stuff when I want it to look more like a deep red, and it does! Take the finishes of your lipsticks into consideration though, since Hot Stuff is matte and I wanted a matte finish, I used my matte to satin red lipstick so it doesn’t add any shine or creaminess. When I want to make it pinker, I mix it with Mac Pleasure Bomb.
Another tip for bold lipsticks: use a lip brush so you just apply enough. Even with the crayon form of Hot Stuff, P599, I still try to use a lip brush as much as possible so I don’t end up with thick layers of lipstick especially because I’m mixing it with another one. I just retouch with Hot Stuff though (after a loooooong while because this stays!) and I am left with just the right amount of deep red I’ve been trying to pull off for years. *Happy dance!*
A quick word on formula, it’s smooth yet pigmented and matte. Usually it’s hard to get a matte lipstick that glides on when you apply it and Shut Up & Kiss Me’s form of a lip crayon puts more pressure on its formula to perform excellently, since you intuitively won’t use a lip brush with it, but I find that it passes the test. You really don’t actually need a lip brush for it because it’s as easy to apply as its non-matte versions, I just like to use one.
I haven’t removed my Hot Stuff lippie from my purse since I first wore it, especially now that I can adjust it a bit for my weird skintone! Glad I finally found myself a deep red! 🙂
