07 Jun Beauty News: Gucci to release cosmetics in September
So why hasn’t the Internet exploded yet? Right? Right?
Designer cosmetics is ruled by a few fashion houses, namely French brands Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent, and a few new players have cropped up, like American designers Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch. Perhaps the Italians felt it’s time to get in the game? My humble opinion is just one word: Finally!
Charlotte Casiraghi has been the brand’s equestrian ambassador since 2010 and was announced last month as the face of the upcoming makeup line. She is fifth in line to the throne of Monaco and Grace Kelly’s granddaughter. She also just became a mum and has a journalism background. In 2009, she co-founded Ever Manifesto. I have not actually read about Charlotte before news of the Gucci cosmetics breaking, but I surmise that royalty trumps any celebrity endorsement. Add the revival of monarchical interest (Hey Kate Middleton!) and Gucci is definitely off to a great start. Never mind jumping in the ring “late”.
The actual makeup will be in select stores in September but just last week, Gucci launched the cosmetics line with a party. Eyeshadows, mascara, lipstick, face and nail products are included in the lineup and it sounds like the eye makeup products are the ones to especially watch out for, according Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini. It is being produced with P&G Prestige. She was reported to have shown off the cosmetics at the launch party with a soft smoky eye and a pale pink lip.
I’m especially excited to see what Gucci will be rolling out because its runway shows always have trendy and fashion forward looks that are still beautiful and can be translated into everyday makeup. And that’s thanks to the genius that is Pat McGrath, who is also creative design director for P&G Beauty. I’m a bit of a fan of Ms. McGrath, I must admit. Even when I was coming up with beauty editorial story briefs and pegs, Gucci was always one of the shows to draw inspiration from. Let’s just wait for September and improve our emotional intelligence together!
What are you excited to see from Gucci cosmetics? I think they’ll enter skincare too, just like Chanel and Dior. What do you think of the brand’s choice of poster girl?
